Abstract:

Forced return in Guatemala is a particularly complex issue, since the specialized literature and reports of international organizations on forced return and reintegration do not manage to characterize all the dimensions that intersect in the communities of origin of returnees, nor the underlying factors that motivated their migratory project.

Despite this difficulty, the reintegration of returned migrants is a priority issue in the case of Guatemala, which is characterized by a broad migratory tradition, where one of the main challenges is to provide conditions in the country that allow for sustainable reintegration, understood as that which provides conditions to avoid remigration and their labor linkage, mainly.

The objective of this research is to analyze the factors that affect the labor reintegration of forced return migrants from the United States to Guatemala during the period 2008-2020. In this case, the study of forced return migration has been analyzed from three theoretical positions, rescuing those typologies that describe forced return subject to a deportation court order, i.e., the decision to return to the country of origin is not a personal desire.

The methodology used was based on a qualitative research approach that, together with the different theoretical perspectives, allowed the analysis of the different dimensions in which the phenomenon of forced return of migrants is immersed. That is, the contextual, historical, economic, social and cultural spheres in which the forced return of migrants takes place. Through this methodological strategy, the main aspects of the process of forced return and reintegration of migrants in Guatemala are presented, as well as the factors that affect or limit the reintegration of labour.

The main conclusion is that the organization of migrants allows the reintegration of migrants to a greater or lesser extent. In this process, there are elements that certainly depend on the migrant, but there are also factors such as programs and projects aimed at this highly vulnerable population group, which is treated as just another group of unemployed and, given the limited supply of labor, swells the ranks of the informal sector of the country's economy.
